ECIS Sustainability Initiative
ECIS conferences play an important role in fostering scholarly exchange, collaboration, and community building within the Information Systems field. At the same time, large international conferences also carry significant social and ecological impacts, including emissions related to travel, resource consumption, food provisioning, and broader questions concerning accessibility and inclusion. Recognizing both the value and the challenges of academic conferencing,
ECIS 2026 in Milan has placed a particular focus on sustainability considerations related to venue, food policy, and future conference practices.
As part of the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), we are launching a dedicated sustainability initiative aimed at shaping the future of IS conferences.
Building More Sustainable IS Conferences Together
During the conference, we will host a focused working meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 14.00 pm (Milan time), where we will discuss a set of guidelines purposal for future IS conferences. These guidelines will articulate how we understand sustainability in the context of academic events and outline concrete approaches for integrating sustainable practices into conference planning and execution for future events.
We warmly invite all conference participants who are interested in sustainability to join this process. Your perspectives and experiences are valuable in helping us co-create meaningful and actionable guidelines.
