Dr. Heiko Gewald is research professor of Information Management at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Director of the Institute for Digital Innovation (ID). His research focuses on HealthIT and specifically the use of digital resources by the aging generation. He is a frequent speaker on conferences contributing to these matters and his work has been published in numerous leading academic and practitioner-oriented journals.


Nilmini Wickramasinghe

La Trobe University, Australia

Dr Wickramasinghe is the Optus Chair & Professor of Digital Health in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at La Trobe University. She researches in the health informatics domain across Australia and the US for over 20 years. In addition, she holds the Professor-Director Health Informatics Management chair at Epworth HealthCare and is an honorary research professor at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, MCRI and Northern Health. She received a Humboldt award for her outstanding contribution to digital health in 2020.


Lauri Wessel

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway

Lauri Wessel is an adjunct professor of Health Care Management at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Ålesund, Norway and professor of Information Management and Digital Transformation at the European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. Lauri’s work is focused on leveraging organization theory in order to design and study the digital transformation of healthcare. His work has been published in journals such as Journal of the Association for Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, Information & Organization and others. He serves as Senior Editor for Information & Organization, has chaired tracks at HICSS, WI, and AMCIS and won multiple awards throughout the course of his career.


Healthcare systems worldwide face monumental challenges in delivering quality care to an expanding aging population while also grappling with the escalating burden of chronic diseases like diabetes and obesity. These challenges are further compounded by the urgent need to contain rising costs and improve access to care. Moreover, there is a growing emphasis on prevention alongside treatment, underscoring the importance of promoting health-conscious behaviors through computing in peoples’ daily lives. Practitioners, policy-makers, and researchers from various fields, including information systems, computer science, and medicine, widely acknowledge that leveraging data meaningfully is essential to addressing these issues. Indeed, recent advancements in computing technologies, coupled with the abundance of data and the broader scope of artificial intelligence (AI), are often hailed as pivotal in reshaping healthcare for a digital era.

Health IT holds the potential to significantly impact the management of these challenges and bolster a healthcare value proposition centered on improved quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of care. However, to date, there remains a dearth of evidence regarding whether Health IT effectively fulfills this promise, and the anticipated benefits of IT have yet to be fully realized. In essence, the question of whether and how digital innovations will propel the digital transformation of healthcare remains pivotal and warrants investigation from various perspectives, employing diverse methodologies, and spanning multiple levels of analysis.

This track solicits conceptual, empirical, and design science research, as well as research-in-progress papers, that tackle this dilemma and contribute to our understanding of all aspects of digital health.

We seek papers addressing

  • innovative measures to prevent diseases and/or promote healthy living
  • mobile health solutions and digital assistants
  • the challenges of the ageing population
  • the management of chronic diseases
  • the application of AI in digital health scenarios and the impact of AI on healthcare (please note that the actual development of AI algorithms should be directed to the appropriate track on AI development)
